Case study

A case study — regression of uterine fibroids

Dr. Uttareshwar Pachegaonkar, Dr. Arati Sharma

Abstract

A woman with complaints of multiple fibroids and chronic cervicitis responds to homoeopathic treatment. Along with the gynaecological problems, her hyperacidity and musculoskeletal symptoms also disappeared under holistic homoeopathic prescriptions. A healthy system bears the capability of reversing a structural pathology like fibroids along with functional symptoms.

Mrs UCL, aged 53, came to the clinic with complaints of menorrhagia (abnormally excessive bleeding during menses) on Sept 27, 2014. She suffered from pain in the abdomen during her periods with heavy bleeding during menstruation. She had been treated by a series of gynaecologists for her pelvic inflammatory disease and a pap smear (laboratory test for early detection of malignancy of cervix and uterus) in June 2011 revealed pelvic inflammatory pathology with a diagnosis of chronic cervicitis with mild dysplasia. An ultrasound scan revealed a bulky uterus, heterogeneous myometrium with multiple fibroids (benign tumours especially in the uterine wall). The larger fibroids measured 16mm. x 14mm. and 18 x 14mm. with multiple fibroids seedlings noted in addition. She was advised to undergo a hysterectomy (surgical resection of the uterus).

She suffered from severe hyperacidity as well. She used to wake up with severe burning in the chest with burning fluid raised above. Occasionally she used to get this burning fluid raised through the nose. The burning sensation used to disturb her sleep, keeping her awake for hours at night. She used to suffer with this hyperacidity almost every night. On giving her history, she said that she used go to bed as soon as she finished her dinner. The endoscopic study (gastroscopy) revealed a hiatus hernia. She was breathless on waking up after each episode of burning in the pit of her stomach.

She had patches of black pigmentation on her face, owing perhaps to the hair dye she applied regularly due to early greying of hair.

She had developed varicose veins in both lower extremities at the popliteal area.

She had tried Āyurvedic treatment but it did not help her.

Then she had started getting more flatulence.

In 2013 she was operated for piles. The piles used to cause severe burning when emitting the stools. The initial bolus of stool used to be hard. Whenever she used to get this initial hard stool, she would develop pain and bleeding in her rectum after the stools.

She had a right-sided inguinal hernia operation in 2008.

She used to get cervical spondylitis with neck pain radiating to both her upper limbs, but it got better. She woke up feeling unrefreshed in spite of sleeping for 6 to 7 hours. She forced herself to wake up early in order to take a regular morning walk followed by yoga practice.

Her tonsils have been removed at the age of 8 years.

Her weight was 53 kgs with a height of 147 cm. Her menstrual cycles were regular but very heavy. The last cycle was May 10, 2014.

She had undergone 2 pregnancies and full-term normal deliveries. She is a very committed housewife with high morals and takes full responsibility of the family.

The patient has four brothers, one of whom died of tongue cancer. Her father had died with diabetes at the age of 72 years. Her mother was 80 years of age and has hypertension. She had one sister enjoying sound health. Her son (30 years) had alopecia patches on the scalp and also suffered from a prolapse of inter-vertebral disc in the lumbar region. Her husband, a retired veterinary doctor, had pan sinusitis and hyperacidity.

The patient was counselled about the pathophysiology of fibroids and the holistic role of homoeopathy. We recommended a diet and daily regimen for her. She was asked to take lemon juice on an empty stomach in the morning as a starter. We convinced the patient that she should take no other medicine to palliate the pain or bleeding. She agreed to rely only on homoeopathy.

Aurum Met 12C single dose on day two
Aurum Met 30C single dose on day two

March 18, 2015:

Her symptoms of spondylitis had worsened; her varicose veins symptoms had become aggravated. The fibroids were also enlarged. The largest fibroid measured 33 mm. x 27 mm.

April 2, 2015:

The varicose veins symptoms were still not relieved.

Acid Fluor 1M single dose on day one
Pulsatilla 6X 10 drops bd
Hammemelis 6X five drops bd.

Acid Fluor 1M single dose on day one
Pulsatilla 6X 10 drops bd.
Thuja 3X 10 drops bd.

February 15, 2016:

The hyperacidity symptoms with regular diet, regular menstruation and moderate cervical spondylitis had become peaceful. The fibroid size has regressed, the largest one being 6 mm. x 4 mm. (just rudimentary). She suffers no more from labyrinthitis and vertigo. The treatment is concluded.

Comments

It is worth noting that, initially for a few months, the size of the fibroids continued to increase in spite of the treatment. The symptoms of deeper pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal complaints such as cervical spondylitis, hyperacidity, varicose veins and menorrhagia were attended to by the system. Later the more harmless structural pathology like fibroids too regressed. This is how a holistic cure takes place. The direction of cure is from the centre to the periphery. The turmoil of hysterectomy has been averted. She is enjoying sound health with a moderate menstrual flow, no hyperacidity, no after-effects of varicose veins and no spondylitis.

1 TDS: thrice a day
2 bd: twice a day
