Homoeopathy and cancer

Dr. Ramanlal P. Patel

Editor’s note

Modern medical management of cancer does not ensure a prolonged disease-free period after using conventional therapy without using strong anti-cancer medication in many cases. However, it has been proved that a miasmatic approach in homoeopathy has prevented cancer for a long time from ‘killing its host’. This approach does not treat the disease but the patient as an individual having a disease condition and on how he/she reacts to the disease physically, mentally and spiritually.

Cancer is a malignant disease of the cells that have lost their normal control mechanism and thus have unregulated growth. Cancer can develop in any tissue within any organ or system.

Now due to excessive publicity in the newspapers, TV, films about cancer and its treatment, it has become a ‘medical problem’. When a great political leader or a renowned doctor dies of cancer, or when a king or queen dies of cancer, it becomes news. All these daily news create fear of cancer. Thus fear of dying from cancer is the greatest killer of patients who have cancer. Fear of the disease is an obstacle in overcoming the sickness and a hindrance in the recovery of cancer patients and it leads him/her to die bit by bit. This is where homoeopathy can be a real help.

A cancer, if given sufficient time, will kill its host but it has been proved that a miasmatic approach has prevented cancer for a long time from ‘killing its host’. The discovery of the three great miasms by Hahnemann is a boon to mankind in treating chronic diseases, especially cancer, by homoeopathic potentised medicines. Our approach to cancer and the patient is quite different from other medical systems. Once a cancer patient, he is for lifetime a cancer patient. He is always in remission stage and not cured. Any day, time, age, he/she can have a recurrence due to any circumstances or causes. I have many patients who stopped treatment as they had no complaint, but after 3, 5, 10, or 15 years, they come back for treatment for the same progressive condition. They were in remission stage, not cured. Miasms play a very important part in the evolution of diseases especially in cancers and chronic diseases.

Homoeopathy does not have any specific medicine or treatment for specific diseases. No two cases are the same. In homoeopathy, individualism is the core factor in the treatment of the patient. We do not treat the disease but the patient as an individual having a disease condition and on how he/she reacts to the disease, physically, mentally and spiritually.

Being a cancer patient myself for more than 50 years with spindle cell sarcoma which was highly malignant with secondaries in the lung, it opened my mind to treat other cancer patients through homoeopathy.

We do have patients who have lived for more than 45 years, and terminal cases who have lived for 2 to 4 years. Many such cases have reached the 5-year ‘survival period’.

We treat the individual as a whole with the indicated medicine, miasmatic medicine and organopathic medicine (according to the involved organ or system of the body, after considering the sphere of action of the medicine).

Illustrative case study

Mr U., a 60-year-old man, was diagnosed as a case of adenocarcinoma prostate. All relevant investigations revealed no distant metastasis. His PSA was 30.10 ng/ml on 27th May 2003. PSA is prostate specific antigen, on an average, a value less than 0.4 ng/ml suggests very low risk of carcinoma. He underwent bilateral orchidectomy on 30.5.03 and radiation therapy was given 37 times from August to September 2003. His PSA level decreased to PSA 0.07 ng/ml (as on April 2004). However this level started increasing afterwards and reached 0.85 ng/ml during December 2004, which was indicating a possibility of recurrence. At that time, the patient started taking homoeopathy. Considering all his physical and mental symptoms, he was given Causticum, Medorrhinum and Sabal serrulata in their appropriate potencies. After administering the chosen drugs, the PSA level decreased gradually to touch a low of 0.03 ng/ml during May 2005. Over a period of the next 3 years, it increased a little to 0.4 ng/ml ( as on October 2008) and stabilised at that level.

This study shows the efficacy of homoeopathic remedies in preventing recurrence of carcinoma. At present we do not have sufficient data in homoeopathy for the treatment of various types of cancer. We have to study, understand and make deep inroads in our understanding of the human body to know how miasms create an imbalance and disequilibrium.
